Is Ligue 1 Really a “Farmers League”?

It’s the favorite refrain of our English neighbors: a “farmers’ league,” supposedly unable to compete with the giant that is the Premier League. But beyond the French bashing, one question deserves to be asked: what do the statistics actually say?

French clubs not far behind

Contrary to popular belief, French clubs are not the easy targets of English giants. Over the past decade, the win/loss ratio shows strong resistance. While English clubs do come out on top more often against French sides, we are still very far from the idea of an overwhelming domination by teams from across the Channel.

The “Farmers League”: A Myth to Deconstruct for Ligue 1

It’s the favorite refrain of our English neighbors. A “farmers league,” supposedly unable to compete with the monster that is the Premier League. But behind this French bashing, one question deserves to be asked: what do the statistics actually say?
With LEGENDISSIME, we decided to go beyond punchlines and barroom debates. The goal: analyze the clashes between French and English clubs in international competitions to determine whether French football is truly “miles behind” clubs from across the Channel.

Is PSG the bogey team for English clubs?

Let’s be honest: Paris Saint-Germain plays a central role in the statistical analysis of French football, to the point of heavily influencing Ligue 1’s overall averages and trends. Thanks to its sporting dominance in recent years, the Parisian club naturally inflates these figures.

Excluding PSG, the win rate drops to 32.7%, with 12.2% draws and 55.1% defeats.

Far from humiliation, but limited efficiency in knockout matches

In knockout games and finals, the conclusion is clear: French clubs generally struggle against their opponents. Across 21 direct head-to-head encounters, including finals, they have progressed or won only 9 times, compared to 12 eliminations — a success rate of 42.9% (versus 57.1% for their opponents).

An open debate on the impact of domestic leagues

As Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta recently pointed out, clubs such as PSG or Bayern operate in leagues where competition is less intense than in the Premier League, which could allow them to better manage their squads and focus more on the UEFA Champions League.

Conversely, other analysts argue that the week-to-week intensity of English football is precisely an advantage for Premier League clubs, as they are accustomed to a high tempo and difficult matches every week, better preparing them for the demands of European competition.

Ligue 1 judged only by its European results?

Unfortunately, no. Every opportunity is good enough to mock our league. A recent example is the celebration of the French league title, which was deemed unworthy of PSG’s standards.

BEYOND THE NUMBERS: THE INTRINSIC VALUE OF LIGUE 1

The value of the French league cannot be measured solely through head-to-head results, but also through its unique ability to produce world-class talent. According to CIES data, France is the world’s second-largest exporter of players behind Brazil, and the leading supplier to Europe’s top five leagues.

Mocked by our English friends, this so-called “farmers’ league” is in reality the incubator of the Premier League.

If the level were truly that low, why would English clubs spend hundreds of millions of euros every transfer window to raid Ligue 1? The reality is that the French league is physically demanding and highly challenging for young talents. Ligue 1 is therefore an elite competition, far removed from the “farmers” cliché.

Origins and perceptions

Understanding the term “Farmers League”

To grasp the scope of this debate, we need to go back to semantics. The term “Farmers League” originated on social media among English football fans. It suggests, with irony, that players in the French league are not full-time professionals, but farmers who play football in the evening after a day’s work. In addition, PSG’s hegemonic dominance over the past decade is seen as a sign of weakness among the other clubs.
